Prevent your pipes from freezing or breaking by letting water drip from the faucet and keeping your thermostat at a consistent temperature; no lower than 55F.
Why:
When there isn’t moving water in your pipes, the leftover water expands to ice putting immense pressure on pipes, causing them to crack or burst, leading to severe and costly water damage, mold, and disruption of water service.
The good news? A few simple steps can protect your home before extreme cold hits.
How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing
Let Facets Drip
Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation
Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots.
Cover outdoor faucets with insulated caps or towels.
Know how to shut off water quickly if a pipe bursts/
Fill jugs, buckets, or a bathtub with water for flushing and washing
What to do if You Think a Pipe is Frozen
Keep the faucet open
Gently apply heat using a hair dryer, heating pad, or warm towels
Start heating near the faucet and move toward the frozen section
Never use an open flame
If you notice a burst pipe:
Shut off your main water valve immediately
Call a professional right away
